This rad little mix I did was inspired by my friend Michelle L Smith, who is an amazing trainer and an amazing human. I put this mix together for her and her bootcamp class using a bunch of my fav rock/alternative remixes that I have been anxiously waiting to use in a mix for a while now. Leftovers

Every time I make a new mix, I gather a bunch of all my current favorites and start listening, arranging and messing around with them. I tweak the order and practice mixing in and out of songs and figure out what flows best and what sounds good together. I always try to keep my mixes under and hour and 15 minutes or so. The problem is that I always have too many good songs, and there always ends up being some tracks that get left out for whatever reason.

I always keep those poor orphan songs in mind and try to get around to using them somehow. This mix is basically all of those tracks that didn't wind up making the cut due t0 time constraints or mix-ability in the last 2 years or so. They're all great tunes, they just didn't make the cut and as you can tell by the tracklist......there's a lot of them!

So here are the left-overs in all their better-late-than-never glory!!! Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Drum & Bass

So, over the last few years or so, I've been listening to a little Drum & Bass here and there. I had a bad opinion about it early on, but I've slowly heard more and more D&B songs that fit more of my taste and style. I've always liked the more positive, happy, and almost cheesier songs when it comes to this type of stuff. This mix is more or less a handful of my favorites over the last 2 years or so.

You won't really catch my playing too much of this stuff out anywhere if you were to see me live, but I've thrown down the SubFocus remix of "Hold On" a few times last summer and also featured it at the end of my KICK START mix.

Anyway, check it out. It's not super long (not even a full 40 minutes, so it should be a quick download). Definitely worth a listen if you like your tunes hard, fast, bassy, and happy. You may see some more of this type of stuff from me, based on the response/feedback.

DUUUUUBSTEP!

I fell in love with Dub Step a few years back, and it has been making it's way into my mixes over the last 2 years or so. For those of you who have been downloading my mixes, you'll notice that the last 20 minutes or so of my latest few have been laced with some of my favorite Dub Step songs.

I connect with Dub Step because it has a lot of elements that I love infused in it. It has BIG, crushing, dirty, hard Bass lines, a lot of Hip-Hop styled percussion and structuring, as well as a lot of eclectic off-beat melodic stuff. Hip-Hop and Hard Dance where really my 1st two musical loves when I was 1st branching out into music on my own (aside from Punk Rock) and DubStep seems to be a perfect marriage of the two.

Anyway, I've taken a bunch of my favorites from over the last few years and threw them together into 1 epic mix, instead of just the last 20 minutes of my usual stuff. It starts off kind of melodic and ends on a more wobbly, hard note.

I couldn't help myself. I'd been playing the original version of this song all summer, but after seeing the Youtube video of the crew bouncing around Pauly's computer to it a while back and having "T-Shirt Tiiiiime" stuck in my head, I had to do it this way!!

Since I got home from the summer tour, my nose has been in the books non-stop. After finally finishing up all my course work and completing my NASM certifications, I finally have some freedom to work on music.

This song has been all over the radio forever and I've been slobbering at a chance to re-do it before it wasn't cool anymore (although, I may have actually missed the boat on that one). I had neither the time nor the vocals, but they both sort of presented themselves at the same time and I threw this remix together in one day (That's how much creative energy I had built up!!)

I didn't mess with it too much, that is to say it isn't unrecognizable or anything. I just kind of kept the original style of the main riff and ended up going a more sort of Trancey/Emotional route which I think worked out pretty well. It isn't my usual style, but as with most of the stuff I remix, I usually make it into something that I would want to play out somewhere and this is definitely that.

Transmissions From The Tour Pt. II

DON'T STOP BELIEVING!

I threw this at the kids here in Illinois, it took most of them by surprise. I got the idea from a guy on the tour in Colorado. (Thanks Mr. Frankie Ocampo!!) Just a simple re-edit and mixable version of the famous "Don't Stop Believing". The kids (and adults) seemed to really enjoy it, especially when I cut the sound and left only their voices to fill the room. It's always hard to find a good balance of music that will keep the kids moving that is fun/current, and also doesn't offend anybody. This song seemed to do the trick!

Transmissions From The Tour

AND A MILEY SONG WAS ON...

The summer tour has been amazing. I've got 2 weeks down and a hand-full to go. The kids have been so fun every night and all the CIY staff has been rad in every city, but that was to be expected. What wasn't expected, however, was how much I was going to have to play a certain Miley Cyrus song this summer.
Turns out that her song "Party In The USA" was the unofficial anthem of the CIY summer. I hadn't heard the song until my 1st week this summer (too much surprise of some people) and it turns out that the kids go absolutely bonkers when it comes on. They even learn a dance that goes with it, which looks pretty unbelievable when 1300 people are all dancing the same dance all at once.
If you haven't heard the song, this is it here. Incredibly poppy and catchy.

Now as most of you know, it's not really the style of song that i would typically play. With this busy summer schedule, I definitely didn't have time to make a remix of my own and last week I really tried but I just couldn't find the time. I found a couple decent ones out there so did a little re-editing of one of them and it worked out OK but it wasn't enough for me. So, what I decided to do was to flip it up a little by actually dropping in a few of the songs that she claims to be her favorite in her lyrics (rumor has it that she hadn't actually heard a Jay-Z song before she recorded this.)

Anyway, the kids weren't expecting this or the remix which is quite a bit faster (128bpm) than the original version (around 96Bpm). Some of them were into it, some were hating on it, some were way to cool for school, and some of the others were just straight up confused as to what was happening. Regardless, almost all of them jumped in when the chorus came in and it looked like this:

The footage isn't that great. I tried to wedge my camera up between my turntables and my mixer and I ended up only catching the right side of the auditorium, which was a bummer because the left side seemed to be a lot more into it and hyped up, and with the lighting you can't really see any of the kids in the back. Anyway, this is just a little preview of some of the fun I've been having.

Our Kind Of Wedding Reception

So as most of you who know me or have been listening to my music over the years know that I am not a Hip-Hop DJ. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Hip-Hop and have listened to it since I was a wee little ghetto kid in the big city of McGill, Nevada and even back in my Plentywood, Montana days I was very familiar with who Turbo and Ozone were. A lot of the stuff I play today has Hip-Hop influences and rap vocals and a lot of the music is actually remixes of Rap/Hip-Hop songs, but I'm not one of those types of DJ's that cuts-up the latest Rap song on the 1's 2's.

I especially am not one of those DJ's that many people think of when the hear the term "DJ." People tend to think DJ and automatically conjure up the image of a "WEDDING DJ." You know what I mean...that guy at the wedding reception with the dorky tux on trying to get everybody on the dance floor to YMCA and The Macarena. Sadly, that is what many people assume I am when I tell them that I am a DJ. Let's be perfectly clear, I am not this guy:

That's right, you know the one I'm talking about. That guy who blasts Nickelback in the car on the way to the wedding, driving way past the speed limit, wishing he was a NASCAR driver, anxious about the 3 times that he plans on dropping "The Cupid Shuffle" tonight at the reception, palms sweaty, talking to himself about how he never should have been cut from the basketball team all 4 years of high school. Yeah, that guy who is out from behind the decks on the floor dancing with your drunk aunt at the end of the night during the extended version of "The Cha-Cha Slide" that goes on and on for 12 minutes. This guy:

My beautiful Bride and I were not about to let any of that garbage happen at our wedding reception, so I decided I would take matters into my own hands. I was going to mix all the music myself in short 10- to 15-minute mini-mixes before the wedding and just play it off an iPod or a computer or something through some big speakers. So I worked on it for a couple months and was pretty excited about how things were sounding and we were getting more and more excited about how all our friends would react when we dropped some serious Old School jams! I started mixing songs with certain friends in mind, cutting and editing songs to keep things moving and people perspiring. It was going to be epic!!!!

Then we decided we were going to switch up the whole wedding thing all together, not just the reception. We decided we were going to go on a cruise, taking our family and friends with us, and we were going to get married on a beach somewhere. We couldn't have made a better decision! That decision, however, meant that we'd have to sacrifice some things, and one of those things was the brilliant dance-a-thon reception that we had come up with.

So on the last night of the cruise, with our entire crew (family, friends, bride and groom) all wearing white, gathered in a meeting room we somehow managed to hijack on the boat, after the heart-felt toasts and well wishes and tears...I plugged in the iPod and we blew the roof off!

Luckily, Stacey had convinced me to bring the music, and somehow, some way, we managed to have the reception we never thought we would have!

A Funny Feeling

I finally got around to getting this mix together. Been working on this thing for about 3 months now and I just haven't had time to just lay everything down, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Most of the usual shenanigans you'd expect in this mix, although there was some world/island influenced stuff in there as well as some drunken gypsy type stuff. But as with all my music a try to keep a little sense of humor in there so you'll notice little things in the mix that will hopefully make you smile as well as make you move. Anyway, I hope this makes you feel funny.
